What is Your BMI (Body-Mass Index)?

First off, what is BMI?

Well, the BMI was introduced in 1990 by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute as part of the first federal guidelines on how to identify, evaluate, and treat people with excess weight.

What did they do that? I've got NO IDEA! All I know is that when this happened, I personally went from being "a little heavy" to "Severely Overweight". And I didn't gain a pound, so what changed? I know that the American population as a whole isn't getting thinner, and I didn't get fatter, so what changed. Well, I think it was that we finally starting admitting that such a large percentage of the American population is overweight.

OK, so here is the formula for calculating your BMI. And for those of you, who like me aren't the best at math, I'll put up a link soon to an web page that will do this calcualtion for you. In the meantime, here it is:

You will need the following information:
Your weight in pounds:
Your height in inches:

Take your weight and divide it by your height in inches, squared then multiply by 705 and this will give you your BMI.

So for me: 250 pounds divided by 76 inches squared times 705 = a BMI of 30.5
Now what does that mean, well... Let's look at the chart:

If your BMI is:
below 18.5 is Underweight
between 18.5 & 24.9 is Normal
between 25 & 29.9 is "Grade 1 Obesity." which means you are moderately overweight
between 30 & 39.9 is "Grade 2 Obesity." which means you are severely overweight
over 40 is "Grade 3 Obesity." which means you are massively overweight

So, I am sorry to say that I am, like a very high number of Americans overweight and need to do something about it.

30 Days to Lower Cholesterol

Understanding Cholesterol

In order to understand why it is important to lower cholesterol, it is necessary to first understand what cholesterol is. Cholesterol is a fatlike waxy substance and is produced by the liver. Although cholesterol has purposes and is important to overall health and body function, too much cholesterol in the body has damaging effects.

Cholesterol forms every cell within the body. When the cholesterol level is appropriate, it plays a life-giving role in many functions of the body. When cholesterol is at a good level it works to build and repair cells, produces hormones such as estrogen and testosterone, and produces bile acids which are proven to aid in the digestion of fat.

With too much cholesterol in the body, though, the levels build up and cause damage by clogging your arteries. This puts you at serious risk for disease such as heart and stroke. In fact, the major cause behind heart attacks and strokes is clogged arteries resulting from high levels of cholesterol.

When you eat saturated foods such as dairy, meat and eggs your cholesterol elevates. On the other hand when you eat foods such as fruits, vegetables, and grains you can maintain optimal health as they do not contain cholesterol.

High cholesterol can be avoided! With a nutritious diet, the 50% of all adult Americans with high cholesterol can regain their health and lower their risk of disease by 2%. This is done simply from reducing cholesterol by 1%.

Cholesterol can be managed for life with success! It is recommended that you visit your physician on a regular basis to keep a keen eye on your levels.

You should check out this new book that I've been working on. If you have any problems or concerns about your cholesterol, then it could change your life. CLICK HERE for the link to the information page about the book.

The Rules for Healthy Weight Loss

It is important to make sure to include the term "Healthy" whenever you are considering any type of weight loss. If you jump into a drastic weight loss program, which unfortunately is the "fad" today, you should re-think it. It is vitally important that whenever you are considering a weight loss of any kind that you consult a medical professional to make sure that you are doing something that is "healthy" for you.

Now, let's look at some of the "Rules" for a healthy weight loss:

First, make sure that you actually need to lose weight. It is important that you are looking at yourself objectively and making the decision to lose weight based on who you are and what your goals are. All too often, people, especially younger women, have an altered sense of reality when it comes to what a woman's body should look like. Today, the bodies that the supermodels and other celebrities have are not necessarily what is healthy. Just look at all the problems that they have.

Second, do not start any type of weight loss program until you are ready. If you aren't doing this for the right reasons, then you are not going to be successful. Just like quitting smoking, if you aren't doing it for the right reasons. Things like I'm going to lose weight for my boyfriend/girlfriend.

Third, pick a diet that provides all the essential nutrients. Make sure that you are getting what you need to maintain good health. Going on the "Grapefruit and ONLY Grapefruit Diet" isn't going to give you the vitamins and minerals you need, unless you are taking supplements on a daily basis.

Fourth, Choose a diet with sensible goals. It isn't a good idea to try and lose too much, or to set too big a goal for weight loss. Despite what you are seeing on TV shows like "The Biggest Loser", it isn't a good idea, unless you are under the direct supervision of a doctor that you lose double digit weight in a week. Maybe 3-5 pounds a week is more reasonable.

Finally, Pick a diet you can live on forever. If the thought of sticking with your weight loss program triggers pure panic, then it isn't the right diet for you. Remember that weight control is a lifestyle change and a healthy lifestyle should be a lifelong committment.

What's this Hoodia Stuff All About?

I've heard a lot about different weight loss pills that have been hititng the market, just like you have. But, usually they are these nasty chemical compounds that within a few months get pulled off the market because of all of the side effects and problems that have been related to them.

Recently, I've been reading about this new stuff called Hoodia. and here is what's I've been able to findout:

Hoodia is a very rare botanical. It comes from a cactus like plant that grows almost exclusively in South Africa. There are several compounds in Hoodia that help to supress your appetite. This is done by a chemical that works directly in the brain to activate nerve cells that make you feel as if you are full. There have been no reported side effects despite all the testing that has ben done.

Since Hoodia is one of the most publicized weight loss products right now, there are a number of "fake" hoodia products out there on the market. To be honest, there is no such thing as cheap hoodia. It is very expensive to produce, so regular doses cost a bit. But companies such as the one listed above are offering a trial of "Real" Hoodia.

Don't miss out on this limited time offer, I know that I am going to give it a try. Especially with the 20 pounds that I've tacked on in the past 6 months.
